2026 Summer Music Camp Award Winners
The Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers’ Association Summer Music Camp Award was established to provide financial assistance to music students who wish to attend a music camp or virtual music camp during the summer of the competition year.
Shuxin Zhang, Saskatoon
Shuxin Zhang attended the Summer String Experience Camp.
I was in Lilian’s group. She taught us the basics like bow hold, rest position, violin hold, some rhythms, and more. My second class was with Agata and she trained our ears. My third class is with Sheryl, she was really nice and funny. Her class was like a dancing and movement class and I had a lot of fun. All of these were for the concert on Friday night, and it was time for the concert :D. First we performed Twinkle Stars and then Monkey Song and stuff. There was a band so I listened, then came the final dance song. Sheryl taught us this and all of the people loved it so much that we had to do it again. I had lots of fun and learned lots about violin and I think this camp is a great way to start learning violin! 😀
Vivian Reed, Yorkton
Vivian Reed attended the Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party.
My name is Vivian and I’m 12. Kenosee Lake Kitchen Party was really fun and I learned a lot. I went with my cousins but also met lots of new people. At camp, I was in Troy Mcgilvery’s class (from Nova Scotia) and Rob Skeet’s class (From Calgary and nominated Calgary’s best entertainer of the year) for my elective. Both of them were really fun and I got better at piano. In Troy’s class, we practiced for the final showcase and we made a mashup of a bunch of different songs which included: Black Velvet Waltz, This Love (by Maroon Five), Jimmy’s Jig, and Mason’s Apron. In those songs, we learned about chording and rhythm so in the future we can sit down at a piano and accompany fiddlers. In Rob Skeet’s class we learned about improvising and common chord riffs. Some of my favorite parts about camp were in the evenings when we would sit on the benches with a blanket and popcorn and watch some amazing musicians that I hope I can someday be like. Other fun parts were when we were jamming, paddle boarding on the lake, night swimming in the pool, and doing “Splasha”/ the Virginia Reel in the pool. Anyway, camp felt so much like a big family, the food was awesome, and I hope to go back again next year.
Thank you SRMTA for the money and the scholarship. It was well worth it and this is a great experience and opportunity for kids to learn music.
The deadline for the 2027 Summer Music Camp Scholarship is June 01, 2027. Apply online.
