Richard O. Burdick

Richard O. Burdick is a Regina-based composer and French hornist whose work spans a wide range of styles and ensembles. In the past year he has focused on chamber music, with several new works performed in 2025 recitals. His music often blends classical traditions with influences from Chinese cosmology and patterns, creating colourful and expressive pieces that balance technical craft with emotional depth.

Recent highlights include the recording and release of Castle Falls for saxophone, horn & trombone (featured in the latest CMC Prairie Resonance newsletter), along with the ongoing development of works for mixed chamber ensembles. In 2016 he received a grant from the Saskatchewan Arts Board, which encouraged a shift toward more personal, expressive writing while maintaining a commitment to beauty and clarity, moving away from his experimental music roots of the 1970s.

A professional French horn player for many years, Burdick brings a performer’s perspective to his compositions, frequently writing for horn in chamber ensembles.
