We first tasted this dessert at our neighbour’s house. They had moved in from Australia. When we found out it was made from dates, we all said, ‘that can’t be dates!’ The name stuck and it has become the most requested dessert by family and friends. It is super moist and can be frozen for later use.

In my family, anything with bacon goes a long way to making them happy! Here’s a recipe that gets requested for family dinners often.

I have a treasured recipe for sugar cookies behind a picture frame in my house that is written in my grandma’s own handwriting. Some parts are hard to read as she was born in 1900 and had only a grade 3 education. Grandma was such a wonderful person who let me cook and bake with her as a child. She taught me a lot about Mennonite cooking and I still use this recipe whenever I want to make Christmas cookies to decorate.
One of my favorite Christmas albums is Pentatonix “That’s Christmas to Me”. Here’s a beautiful recording of “Mary Did You Know” from that album.

These pumpkin cookies are the most requested cookie by my family at Christmas, and they are very easy to make. This recipe came from a cookbook given to me by a piano student many years ago and I still use quite a few of the Christmas cookie recipes from it.

My mom had her Christmas album and we always listened to her records at Christmas time. This song stood out to me when I was little and now that I am a mom, I like to play it for my son. It is a sweet song that brings out the magic of the Christmas season for little ones.

My favourite memories of Christmas always include my grandmother and great-grandmother. They lived together in the hundred-year-old family farmhouse. Across the yard from an old red barn, the farmhouse had a woodstove and the smoke from the chimney would float over the snowcovered roof as icicles driped from the porch awning. At twilight, the warm glow of the old-style lights flung over cedar bushes was inviting. Inside the house, my great-grandmother would be baking for Christmas. It was hard to keep up, because as soon as she’d finish a treat, family members would pop by. We’d sit in the kitchen and watch the fire in the wood stove, playing cards or scrabble. Always–and I mean always–there were two bowls, one was filled with “Nuts and Bolts” and the other, poppycock.
And on the radio, there’s be Bing or Frank or Dean.
