Sylvie is homeschooled and the second-born girl of four sisters and a baby brother. She is a fun-loving and big-hearted seven-year-old who loves to work on her own piano compositions daily and to sing with her daddy while he leads worship at church. Her hobbies include painting, gardening, baking, swimming, skating, playing with her sisters, and snuggling her brother. She is in her second year of piano lessons and just won two awards at the local piano festival.

Jesse is seven years old with seven other siblings. His favourite summer sport is basketball, and his favourite winter sports are squash, swimming and hockey. Jesse started piano lessons with his older brother when he was six. He has played at the Contemporary Showcase and a duet recital so far this year. “The Russian Sailor Dance” and “Silent Night” are two of his favourite songs he’s learned this year. Jesse also enjoys science experiments and building swords out of cardboard.

Shuxin is 10 years old. He started playing piano when he was 4. He started composing not long after starting piano lessons. He likes music, drawing, badminton, skiing, golfing, swimming and bicycling. His favourite animal is the dragon. His dream is to make a wonderful video game.

Alaina is ten years old and enjoys many activities which include dance, piano, sewing, painting and riding her pony. She recently discovered her love for composing piano pieces and loves to perform for family and friends. She enjoyed participating in the local music festival for the first time this year and is excited to continue with her music studies next year. When not at the piano she can be found playing with her identical twin or new baby sister!

Elias Nour was born in Kingston but has grown up in Saskatoon. Elias is an easygoing and kind-hearted high schooler with a talent for both academics and the arts. A fantastic baritone sax player, he’s part of the school band and has joined the pit band for this year’s musical. He also loves playing the piano, finding joy in making music. A dedicated soccer player, he competes year-round with skill and passion. In his free time, he enjoys drawing, using his creativity to bring ideas to life.

Shadows of the Deep

Ruby Shevkenek is fourteen and has been playing the piano for almost nine years. She plays piano at the hospital once a week, sharing her music with others. In the winter, Ruby enjoys cross-country skiing and playing squash. She also loves reading, crocheting, and baking in her free time. Ruby is homeschooled and comes from a large family with seven siblings, making her household lively and full of energy.

Nathaniel Negad discovered his passion for music in 2019. Studying with his teacher, Marilyn Richardson, he works on his Level 8 piano in the esteemed Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) program. He is an accomplished pianist who has earned several awards.
Nathan actively participates in his school’s concert and jazz bands, showcasing his versatility as a musician. Beyond competitions, he enjoys performing around the Battlefords, sharing his love for music with his community.

composer Jean-Baptiste Lully and his era. Hence, the title is in French. The piece consists of four movements in the key of A minor.
A single musical theme runs throughout the piece.
