The End of a Wonderful Day

Sylvie is 8 years old and in the third grade. She is a fun-loving, very kind, thoughtful, and adventurous little girl. She loves taking piano and voice lessons and entertains her family daily with her musical inspirations. She loves to go ice skating, swimming, paint pictures, and play outside with her sisters and little brother. She also loves to take family vacations. When she grows up, she wants to be a singer and a composer.

Hannah is an energetic 8-year-old from Saskatoon who is enjoying Grade 3. She loves staying active through soccer, challenging herself with math, and expressing creativity at the piano as she works toward her Level 6 RCM. When she’s not practicing or playing, Hannah enjoys relaxing at the lake and getting lost in books, especially her current favourite series, Wings of Fire. Curious, determined, and full of enthusiasm, she brings joy and focus to everything she does.

Sally Donahue is a Grade 2 student in Biggar, Saskatchewan. She has been taking piano lessons for 3 years. Music has been a large part of her life from birth. She loves sports, music and playing with her friends. She is excited for her first official composition and looks forward to many more!

Shuxin is 11 years old. He started playing piano when he was 4. He started composing not long after starting piano lessons. He likes music, drawing, badminton, basketball, taekwondo, skiing, golf, swimming and bicycling. His favourite animal is the dragon. His dream is to make a wonderful video game!

Alaina has always enjoyed music and is very creative. She loves composing her own pieces and playing them for family and friends. Art is another passion, and when she’s not at the piano, you can find her busy with her latest painting or riding her little white pony Pearl. An interesting fact about her is that she is an identical twin!

Matthew is a pianist and composer with a passion for music and a drive to create. He is also a competitive gymnast, and the discipline he brings to his training carries over into his musical work. Outside of music and gymnastics, Matthew enjoys reading, building with Lego, and hands-on projects of all kinds. He is energetic and curious, eager to explore new ideas. These qualities come through in his compositions, which reflect a creative mind constantly engaged with the world around him.

Bailey is a 13-year-old, grade 8 student who started piano when she was 6. She has lots of hobbies like playing basketball, piano, and badminton. Hannah Marple has been her piano teacher ever since she started playing. Bailey entered this competition last year and is excited to enter it again this year.

Teacher: Robyn Rutherford
Lyla Reiche is a Grade 10 student from an acreage near Unity, Saskatchewan, and is learning piano and theory with Robyn Rutherford. She has been playing piano for over 10 years, yet has only seriously begun composing more recently, often drawing inspiration from video game composers like Yasunori Mitsuda and Nobuo Uematsu. She is currently getting ready for her Level 8 piano exam, having already passed her Level 8 theory. Lyla also loves knitting, reading, and spending time with her family.

The Threshold

Brogan Lueke is in grade 12 and is 17 years old. He has been playing piano for 6 years and has taken lessons for 4 (2 year gap during Covid). He is a speed swimmer and a dancer. “The Threshold” is his second original composition on piano and symbolized the feeling of doing a routine you used to take for granted for the last time, specifically his last drama production in grade 12 ending and how it transitioned into the next chapter of his life.
